If you are a new notary or your commission has expired, you will receive the Pearson VUE scheduling email once your application is accepted.

If you are renewing on time, you will receive the Pennsylvania Notary Appointment email which you may forward to our office for processing. We will execute the bond and email it back to you with instructions for going to your county's Recorder of Deeds.

Do I need to take the Pearson VUE exam?

All new notaries and notaries with expired commissions must take the Pearson VUE exam. The first attempt may be completed online through OnVUE. Subsequent attempts must be made a Pearson VUE testing center near you. The Department of State will email you with scheduling information after your application is accepted.

The $65 exam fee is paid directly to Pearson VUE at the time of scheduling. This is paid for every attempt so we suggest studying as much as possible to pass the first time.

After you pass the exam, the Department of State will send you a Pennsylvania Notary Appointment email. Please forward to our office so we may execute the bond and email it back to you with instructions for going to your county's Recorder of Deeds.

Are there any other fees associated with becoming a PA notary?

The total fees other than the course, application, and bond are as follows:
  • Pearson VUE exam (if required): $65
  • County Recording Fee: Ranges from $5 to $106.50 depending on the county and is paid when the bond is recorded at the end of the application process
  • Any needed notary equipment and errors and omission insurance
